Karen and I have a favorite place in the world – Sea Pines Plantation on the tip of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. There’s so much to love about that place, from the weather, to the Spanish Moss, to Greg Russell, and to the wonderful understated homes hidden in the trees throughout the island – including this remodeled Deer Island contemporary octagonal home!
The first time we looked at the Deer Island homes (there’s a bunch of them clustered around a hidden marsh) we were a bit perplexed about how we’d furnish one – with those 135 degree corners!
The complete remodeling of this house, however, shows that it can be done well and with great taste. It’s probably not a home you’d live in year-round, but what a great little weekend getaway!
These outside shots show the interesting shape of the house, the great views from the wrap-around decks, and how the whole thing is set above the ground!
Even the bedrooms (there are two) have character and charm – a lot of it comes from the angled, sloped ceilings and all that glass!
Not bad for a 50-year old house! These come up for weekend rentals now and then, I think we’re going to have to consider staying in one of these next time we’re down there!
