Architects in the Great Lake states have thousands of miles of clear-water shorelines to inspire their designs for weekend getaway homes, and they often come up with inspiring interpretations of the classic contemporary lake cottage home. This one, designed by A&H Architecture, is on a small island at the far western end of Lake Superior.
They’ve taken a simple cottage shape, and will some skillfully executed details, have given it a mellow contemporary character all it’s own. The huge stone fireplace with that long, long hearth is a perfect center for the house.
The kitchen mixes old and new – the lines are clean and contemporary, but the feel is casual family lake house.
With Lake Superior in the background, the main house and storage buildings in the foreground.
There are still some classic details in this contemporary lake cottage, like the exposed studs and sheathing in the walls, and exposed ceiling rafters.
From the Architect’s website: “The design team studied closely the use of translucent color balanced against painted surfaces to achieve a richly textured yet balanced interior. At 1100 sf, the cottage is efficient, with one bath and two bedrooms. Sleeping lofts in the cottage and the storage building expand the guest capacity to 12.”
This home and location (or other lake) speaks beautiful to me. the tree line between the water and home are perfect. The home itself is modern and yet approachable as if it were older. The clearing is a must to frame the entire view of the home . Looks as though everything was considered for the property and home to co exist. So beautiful.
