Houses with character appeal to me – I don’t care what style a house is, I don’t care who the Architect is, and I don’t care what neighborhood it’s in. None of those things are required for a house to be well-designed, like this beautiful custom contemporary home.
So why am I showing you a house with ALL of those things? A very Modern home, designed by McGraw Bagnoli Architects, a prominent Washington DC firm, and located on a private secluded property in Northern Virginia?
Because it’s gorgeous and because it’s loaded with character.
Before you dive too deep into the pictures, let me point out a few things I think are important to notice. First, this house isn’t about bold paint colors, detailed mouldings, or showy cabinetry. It isn’t about the house itself – it’s about the spaces the house creates, and it’s about providing places for the family to live their lives.
That’s what makes it a Modest Mansion, IMHO, and that’s what you’ll see in the pictures – the family’s life is in the foreground; the house is the background that surrounds it.
On to the photos!
The main living/dining/cooking area of the house is almost more glass than wall! I love how the outside is invited in to become a part of the character of the house.
A simple, clean, well organized exterior – just like the interior.
Bookshelves are EVERYWHERE in this house! They’re part of the background I noted earlier – you don’t notice the shelves so much, you see the books, vases, and toys sitting on them.
