Maybe you’re not a fan of contemporary design, maybe you prefer simple, traditional buildings. Or maybe your tastes do run to modern? Either way works in this project, it has a little of both. And if you don’t immediately fall in love with this delightful little modern custom home by Heliotrope Architects, then you’re just not paying attention. At just 2,284 square feet, the house on Washington state’s San Juan Islands is a perfect retreat, but would work well as an everyday home, too.
The Architects cleverly conceived the home as a “barn with a lean-to” – the “barn” has the bedrooms, baths, and utility spaces; the lean-to holds the kitchen, entertaining spaces, and of course, the views.
We like the simple comfort of the interior spaces, with the splash of chartreuse on the pillows inside that’s repeated on the Adirondack chairs outside. The living space is exactly what it should be – one open space with kitchen, casual dining, and living side by side, framed by that spectacular view.
We can both imagine Rich napping in this wonderful reading nook…did you notice how the indoor bench flows though the wall, and becomes the outdoor bench, too?
The other half of this modern custom home – the “barn” half – holds the baths, bedrooms, and utility spaces. Karen thinks this is more of a masculine aesthetic – maybe, but the real decor is the view.
